2002 Summer/Fall Season Tennis Scores
These scores really don't have much to do
with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly
matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay
reasonably fit... (note: we play best 2 out of 3 sets for
the match, but often play a third set even when the match is
over in 2 sets).
Summer/Fall 2002: John 26 Don
December 21 John
5-7 6-1 6-3
Last match of the summer/fall season.
Don was looking good in the first set, but John could do no
wrong in the second and third. The wind was
swirling, making it hard on the server.
November 20 John
6-4 3-6 6-4
John squeaks through in a hard third set.
November 10 John 6-7
6-4 6-4
On clay again. After being put through
a few drills by Dave we faced off on clay. Don came
back from a break down to take the first set and was up 4-2
in the second when John came roaring back. 4 hours on
the court...
November 9 Don got a new
racquet and shoes and did well in an afternoon of musical
partner doubles on clay, then was up a set and a break on
hard courts when Dave finished shopping and the match was
abandoned...
November 8 John 6-4
6-2 6-3
Don's last match with his old racquet and
Wal_Mart shoes...
November
2 Don 6-7 7-5 6-3
John almost gave Don the first set as a gift
- John played what should have been double fault when he was
up 5-3 and 15-40 on Don's serve (double set point).
Don came back and nearly took the set before John held on in
the tiebreaker. The third set was long and hard, but
Don came up with a couple accidental miracle shots on key
points.
October 25 John 6-2
7-6 6-2
John was playing with a bum elbow, but Don
had to play in Wal-Mart shoes. Good points considering
the long layoff.
September 30 John
6-2 4-6 7-6
Don had match points serving at 6-5 in the
third was denied. All John in the tiebreaker.
John's serve was smokin.
September
23 Don 4-6 6-4 9-7
Don played conservatively to counteract the
effects of loose tattered stings and somehow managed to deal
with John's moon-ball wizardry. Neither of us was
serving well... First match of the fall season.
September 18 John
4-6 6-3 6-3
Don had 4-0 in the first before John stormed
back to tie it at 4-4. Don held onto the first set but
couldn't stop yet another Mace come from behind
victory. John played like a moon-ball wizard.
September 16 John
5-7 6-4 6-2
Don ran out of gas after a grueling week in
Dell/M$ re-installation hell...
September 11 John
7-5 6-2
The wind was a huge factor during this
match, and John was able to adjust better than Don.
Either that or Thor is one of John's cousins (I couldn't
believe how many of John's shots the wind blew back into
play...)
September
8 Don 6-2 6-4
Don finally got his serve under control
(after a minor style adjustment) and pulled the plug on the
Mace machine - no double faults in the match for Don!!
Could this be the dawn of a new era, or just a fluke?
Time will tell...
September 3 John 7-6
5-7 7-6
Three and a half hour match with good
rallies, excellent shots and a whole lot of running going
on. John really hates to lose, coming back from 3-5 in
the first set and from 2-5 in the third set. Don had
two match points (serving at 5-2 in the third) but couldn't
stop the comeback king...
August 31 John 6-4
6-2 6-3
Great points and plenty of clean winners,
but service breaks galore - John won the first set on the
strength of 2 service holds to Don's 1. The third set
was won on a single service hold.
August 27 John 7-5
4-6 6-4
This match could have gone either was as
John came back from 2-5 to take the first set. Good
rallies.
August 20 John
6-4 6-2 6-2 6-2
Four sets in only 2 hours as Don had massive
problems keeping the ball in the court.
August 14 John 7-5
6-4
Excellent play (by our standards), nearly
two and a half hours to play two sets. Long points,
long games, great serves, patience in the rallies, and
plenty of smoke on the winners. Don had set point on
his serve in the first set, but
John was hitting hard and accurate, taking three quick
points for the break. Sweated about a
gallon each.
August 12 John 6-4
6-3
John was Mr. Net man, as well as being on
top of his serve.
August 10 John 6-4 6-4
August 6 John 7-5
6-1
Don was slightly out of phase the whole
match...
August 4 John 7-5
6-3
John was channeling the Sampras serve confidently
enough to give up a "do-over" on the first match
point before winning on the second...
August
2 Don 3-6 6-4 6-4
Good serving on both sides in another
sweat-out. Only one break in the third, a rarity for
us.
July 31 John 7-5
6-2 6-4
Sweat city - John's shoes gave out in the
first set (soles coming off), but Don had just bought a
temporary pair from Wal-mart so John used Don's magic shoes
to finish the match.
July
16 Don 4-6 7-5 7-5
Good points, long rallies, and passing shots
galore. Don took better care of his serve than usual
(only a couple double faults, none in the first set).
July
15 Don 7-6 6-3
John made a valiant attempt to save the
first set, fending off 4 set points in the tiebreaker before
going down 9-7. No third set since too many
people were waiting for the courts.
July 12 John 2-6
7-5 7-5
John came back from 2-4 on both the second
and third set, saving match points at 4-5 on his own serve
in both sets.
July 8 John 6-2
5-7 7-5
We beat the balls up slugging it out in the
last two sets. Don saved a match point in the second
and several in the third set, but John had been watching too
much Wimbledon and was playing like Mr. Net-man.
July 6 John 6-4 6-2 6-4
Don had some trouble with his serve while
the Mace machine could do no wrong at the net.
July 3 John 1-6 7-5
6-4
John held his opening serve, then Don found
his zone and took 9 straight games to go up a set and
3-0. Don let the circus on the next court get into his
head after a crucial "do-over" while John got down
to the business of hitting winners for a great comeback win.
June
30 Don 2-6 7-5 7-5
Don managed to come back from 1-4 in the
third set to even the summer season at three all. Long
rallies and amazing shots by both.
June 26 John 6-3
6-4 6-3
Don was fatigued from evening doubles on
the 25, but John made some beautiful passing shots on the
run during key points. Not to mention the swinging
backhand overhead volley...
June 24 John 6-1
2-6 7-5
Great points and lots of good shots by both
as John holds onto the third set. Don saved 11 match
points, 9 of them in one game while serving at 4-5 in the
third - there were 15 deuce points in that game (36 points
total).
