2003 Winter/Spring Season Tennis Scores
(solstice to solstice)
These scores really don't have anything to do
with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly
matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay
reasonably fit... (note: we play best 2 out of 3 sets for
the match, but often play a third set even when the match is
over in 2 sets).
Winter/Spring 2003: John 28 Don
June 18
Don 2-6 6-3 6-2 |
| Don thwarted John's dream
of 30 wins in this season by pulling out a win in
this afternoon match. Plenty of good points
and forcing shots from both sides of the net.
Don took care of his serve in the second and third
sets. Match

John 7-5 6-3 |
| John prevails again in a
hard fought 2 set morning match. Don failed to
convert on a set point in the first and almost every
game in the second set went to multiple deuces, the
first two games having 10 and 7 deuce points
respectively. Match

John 6-4 5-7 6-0 |
| John came off the short
term injury list to hand Don a bagel in the third
set of this morning match. Don was
running on fumes after a long game to save the
second set and a three set match with Mike the
previous evening, barely saving three match points
to set up his 12th winner (thankfully salvaging
something from the third set). Match

John 7-6 6-4 |
| Excellent match with
vigorous points. Don saved about 7 set points
while coming back from 5-2 in the first and had two
set points at 6-5 (which John saved).
John took the tiebreaker 7-4 after Don saved 2 more
set points. Second set was back and forth but
John wound up on top after Don failed to capitalize
on a rare concession. Match

John 6-4 3-6 6-3 |
| Close match and a good
workout. Third set was well played, decided by
one break (Don dropped a service game from 40-15
after missing a block volley to the open court (and
the whole court was open because John was on the
side fence...)) Match

John 6-4 6-1 7-5 |
| Another short match, at
least the official part. The optional third
set for fun was almost as long as the match. Don
still couldn't stop the Mace train, though he did
make a run for the third set and was serving at 5-3 for
the set when John came back to take it with
four straight. Match

11 Don 5-7 6-4 9-7 |
| Major wind factor today,
blowing hard, but swirling so you never knew which
direction the next gust was coming from. Don
finally managed to take care of his serve late in
the match, as did John till the last game when Don
managed to put the whup on a passing shot at triple
match point. Match time 2:41 |

6-3 6-1 |
| The nightmare
continues. John played with one of Don's
racquets and managed to put even more smoke on his
whipping forehand. Don served well, putting in
a high percentage of first serves and not giving up
his "ultra-FBI" till the last game.
Unfortunately Don is still pulling his eyes off the
ball when he finally gets one that should be an easy
put-away... |

| John was swinging loose
(after a beer), hitting good serves and smoking
his forehand, while Don struggled to hold
serve. Maybe the beer was a good idea!
This match was started on May 2 but was suspended
due to rain at 3-3 with John serving at 30-40. Match time

12 Don 7-6 5-7 7-5 |
| Long points, games, and
sets. John saved 5 set points to force a
tiebreak in the first, but Don won the close
tiebreak 10-8. Don had an early break in the
second, but John was Mr. Netman when he needed
it. Third set took over an hour and was close
all the way till Don's backhand cross-court passing
shots shut down John's net game. Match time

| John won the first set
easily at 6-2, but Don was about to serve for the
second set at 5-4 when the rains came.
We nearly resumed the match a couple hours later,
but once again, the rains came and the match was
suspended. Resumed on April 5, Don won the
second set, then John Stormed through the third.

| Don was up 5-2 in the
first when John staged another comeback rally (plus
the wind was shifting, so Don had the wind behind
him 5 games in a row!!). The second set was a
real battle, with long games, power hitting, plenty
of great gets and winners on both sides. Don
had trouble holding serve in the third set as every
muscle in his body began to cramp in
succession. John was on the verge of doing the
Roddick too, but not till he put away the match on
his fifth match point. Match time 2:38 |

| Don was up 5-2 in the

5-2 again in the second but managed to stop John's

third set Don was up 3-0 and had two break points on
John's serve, but John won 4 in a row before Don

March 19 John 6-2
7-5
John was pumped up and hitting his serve
well as he rolled over Don in 2 sets. Match time 1:36
March 18 John 6-2
4-6 6-2
Don felt like he was hitting well, but John
had the answer more often than not, consistently hitting
deep balls. Don was up 5-1 in the second before John
made the mini-comeback. John had 5-0 in the third
before Don squeaked out a couple games.. Match
time 1:44
March
14 Don 5-7 6-4 6-4
John came from behind (5-4) in the first set
but couldn't do it in either the second or third. Don
had trouble with John's mega-sun-lob, but made up for it
with a few sweet angle shots and lobs of his own.
March 8 John 6-2
6-2 3-6
John hates to lose and came out playing like
it was third set, banging in the big serve...
March
7 Don 5-7 6-4 7-5
John came back from 3-5 in the first, but
Don's passing shot picked up in the second.
March 4 John
6-2 4-6 6-4
Fat-i-gue was a factor on both sides after a
month of bad weather and good food. Don was up early
in the third set but John came back for the win.
February
3 Don 6-4 3-6 6-4
Don finally wins a match after over three
weeks of cold wet weather. John blinked in the third
set while serving at 4-4, and that's all it took (well that
and a few timely passing shots).
January 9 John 7-6
5-7 6-4
John squeaked through another long hard
three hour match that was decided by even less than
yesterday's heartbreaker. Don had triple set point in
the first set but let it slip away after John made two
amazing gets. John was up 5-2 in the tiebreaker but
let Don get back to 6-6 before winning at 8-6. In the
third set Don came back from 5-2 and had break point for
5-5, but John channeled Sampras and held on for the
match.
January 8 John 6-3
5-7 8-6
Well played three hour match - long points
and a whole lot of running, even in the third set. Don
had two match points serving at 6-5 in the third but
couldn't put it away.
December 29 John
7-6 6-4
Two long, excellent sets, long rallies, and
plenty of winners on both sides. The sun was
definitely a factor in the first set. John was up 6-0 in the
tiebreaker when we switched sides; I brought it back to 6-6,
at which point we switched sides again, allowing John to win
the next 2 points...
December 23 John
6-4 3-6 6-3
Excellent match with great rallies and
smoking winners. Serving on both sides was much better
than usual.
