2004 Winter/Spring Season Tennis Scores
(solstice to solstice)
These scores really don't have anything to do
with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly
matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay
reasonably fit... (note: we play best 2 out of 3 sets for
the match, but often play a third set even when the match is
over in 2 sets). Commentary by Don
unless noted.

Don couldn't hit the easy shots in this relatively
cool morning match, consistently spraying the ball 4-6
inches wide. Don had set points serving at 6-5
and again in the tiebreaker, but couldn't convert as
John held on to win in straight sets.

John outlasted Don in this late morning/height of noon
sweatfest (Don did play two sets with Mike the night
before in 100% humidity). Both players were
dragging in the third, but John chose the right balls
to come in on and took the last of Don's legs while
winning five in a row from 1-2 (a break down) to take
the set.

Don took the ever crucial first set but John was
hungry for a win as he strives to achieve the golden 3
to 1 ratio by season's end. Don was up 4-1 in
the third set after consolidating a break, but John
managed to come back and take the set with solid play
as Don racked up the errors.

After a week of doubles and singles matches (with
Mike) Don and John got out for a morning match - good
thing too, as the match set a new record for the
longest match, despite setting the old record only
last week - and there was no rain delay in this
match. Most games went to at least deuce,
and many went to deuce three or four times (providing
the opportunity for us to rack up the errors).
The third set was a relatively clean set with more
winners than errors for both players in the
third. Don gained the edge with several good
forehand down the line passing shots as John tried to
shorten points at net.

Don saved 4 set points and lost one of his own in the
first set, which took an hour and 20 minutes (long
points and games). Rain moved in as Don was
serving at 3-4 30-30 in the second, but we were able
to resume after a 3 hour delay. Don won the
first 6 points (and two games) after the delay, but
John forced the second set into another long
tiebreaker that went to Don. The first four
games of the third set were long games with heavy
hitting and multiple deuces, but John's was hitting
bigger and took them all en route to another
victory...

Don was up 3-0 in the second set when this match begun
on May 27 but was suspended due to severe storms - Don
was in his zone channeling "the punisher"
and seeing good results when the storms came.
When the match resumed John was well rested and came
out with his big serve and sometime volley game.
Both of us were hitting great shots and running down a
lot of balls.

Don jumped out 4-0 in both the first and third set on
his way to victory in this morning match. John
came back to 3-4 in the third, but Don managed to stay
focused and close out the set despite an injury
suffered just prior to the match (bicycle mishap
causing a minor scrape and ankle bruise that started
swelling towards the end of the first set).

John wins the stat game and this early morning
match. John managed to hold a long service game
at 1-1 after facing 7 break points - the first set
(possibly the match) could easily have gone Don's way
if John had lost that game.

John struggled on serve in the first three games of
the opening set (serving about 40 points in his first
three service games opposed to 13 points for Don's
first three service games. John got the first
break to go up 5-3 but Don won four in a row to take
the crucial first set. A new string job seemed
to help Don improve his winner/unforced error ratio
just enough to derail the Mace train.

Another long opening set (1:07) that could easily have
gone either way falls on John's side of the net.
John went up 3-0 after Don dropped his opening service
game from 40-15. Don came back to tie at 4-4 and
5-5, then double faulted 3 times during a long service
game (~18 points) to give John the break he
needed. The second set was also close - Don even
seemed to have the edge during the first half of the
set, winning games slightly easier through 3-3.
Then John successfully transformed to Net Man and made
several great touch volleys on difficult balls to end
the match before he ran out of gas...

The first set of this evening match took over an hour,
with long points and long games as both knew the

fatigue factor after a long day). Don won the
battle of the stats, but lost the match as John
managed to win more of the close games by hitting
forcing shots to the corners..
