2004 Winter/Spring Season Tennis Scores
(solstice to solstice)

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit... (note: we play best 2 out of 3 sets for the match, but often play a third set even when the match is over in 2 sets).  Commentary by Don unless noted.

Winter/Spring 2004:  John  24      Don  8

Note: Winners include aces, unforced errors include double faults

June 20    John  6-4  7-6(8-6)     Match time: 2:11
John saved three set points in the tiebreaker with miracle gets to pull out a straight set win in the last match of the winter/spring season, clinching the golden ration of 3-1.

June 19    John  6-1  7-6(10-8)     Match time: 2:08
Don couldn't hit the easy shots in this relatively cool morning match, consistently spraying the ball 4-6 inches wide.  Don had set points serving at 6-5 and again in the tiebreaker, but couldn't convert as John held on to win in straight sets.

June 17    John  6-4  2-6  6-2     Match time: 2:08
John outlasted Don in this late morning/height of noon sweatfest (Don did play two sets with Mike the night before in 100% humidity).  Both players were dragging in the third, but John chose the right balls to come in on and took the last of Don's legs while winning five in a row from 1-2 (a break down) to take the set.

June 12  John  4-6  6-4  7-5    Match time: 3:05
Don took the ever crucial first set but John was hungry for a win as he strives to achieve the golden 3 to 1 ratio by season's end.  Don was up 4-1 in the third set after consolidating a break, but John managed to come back and take the set with solid play as Don racked up the errors.

June 7  Don 6-7(7-2)  6-4  6-4    Match time: 3:22
After a week of doubles and singles matches (with Mike) Don and John got out for a morning match - good thing too, as the match set a new record for the longest match, despite setting the old record only last week - and there was no rain delay in this match.   Most games went to at least deuce, and many went to deuce three or four times (providing the opportunity for us to rack up the errors).  The third set was a relatively clean set with more winners than errors for both players in the third.  Don gained the edge with several good forehand down the line passing shots as John tried to shorten points at net.

May 31 John 7-6(10-8)  6-7(8-6)  6-2    Match time: 3:19
Don saved 4 set points and lost one of his own in the first set, which took an hour and 20 minutes (long points and games).  Rain moved in as Don was serving at 3-4 30-30 in the second, but we were able to resume after a 3 hour delay.  Don won the first 6 points (and two games) after the delay, but John forced the second set into another long tiebreaker that went to Don.  The first four games of the third set were long games with heavy hitting and multiple deuces, but John's was hitting bigger and took them all en route to another victory...

May 29 John 7-5  2-6  6-4    Match time: 2:11
Don was up 3-0 in the second set when this match begun on May 27 but was suspended due to severe storms - Don was in his zone channeling "the punisher" and seeing good results when the storms came.  When the match resumed John was well rested and came out with his big serve and sometime volley game.  Both of us were hitting great shots and running down a lot of balls.

May 13 Don  6-1  4-6  6-3    Match time: 2:25
Don jumped out 4-0 in both the first and third set on his way to victory in this morning match.  John came back to 3-4 in the third, but Don managed to stay focused and close out the set despite an injury suffered just prior to the match (bicycle mishap causing a minor scrape and ankle bruise that started swelling towards the end of the first set).

May 10 John 6-3  6-2    Match time: 1:25
John wins the stat game and this early morning match.  John managed to hold a long service game at 1-1 after facing 7 break points - the first set (possibly the match) could easily have gone Don's way if John had lost that game.

May 8 Don 7-5  2-6  6-4    Match time: 2:27
John struggled on serve in the first three games of the opening set (serving about 40 points in his first three service games opposed to 13 points for Don's first three service games.  John got the first break to go up 5-3 but Don won four in a row to take the crucial first set.  A new string job seemed to help Don improve his winner/unforced error ratio just enough to derail the Mace train.

May 5 John   7-5  6-4    Match time: 1:51
Another long opening set (1:07) that could easily have gone either way falls on John's side of the net.  John went up 3-0 after Don dropped his opening service game from 40-15.  Don came back to tie at 4-4 and 5-5, then double faulted 3 times during a long service game (~18 points) to give John the break he needed.  The second set was also close - Don even seemed to have the edge during the first half of the set, winning games slightly easier through 3-3.  Then John successfully transformed to Net Man and made several great touch volleys on difficult balls to end the match before he ran out of gas...

April 28  John   7-6(7-4)  6-2    Match time: 1:39
The first set of this evening match took over an hour, with long points and long games as both knew the importance of the first (sensing the onset of the fatigue factor after a long day).  Don won the battle of the stats, but lost the match as John managed to win more of the close games by hitting forcing shots to the corners..

April 26  John   6-3  2-6  6-4    Match time: 1:53
Don saved 6 set points in the first set, but had too much trouble holding his serve amidst all his double faults.  Don hit plenty of winners, mostly in the second, then started racking up the errors in the third.  John seemed fresher in the third set..

April 24  John   6-2  6-3    Match time: 1:30
John wins in two strenuous sets that were closer than the score would seem to indicate.  We played 3 sets of doubles immediately after this match, about three and a half hours on the court.

April 21  Don  6-4  3-6  6-2    Match time: 1:57
Don stops John's 3-match streak (and John's fantasy of another bagel) by taking care of his serve and reigning in his unforced errors.  Don was up 4-0 in the first before John got on the board, and jumped up 5-0 in the third set to squelch John's comeback.  There were several excellent long points (including one extremely long point).

April 17  John  6-0  7-6(7-4)    Match time: 1:36
John re-bagels Don as he continues to hit big serves and dominate the net.  Don nearly took the second set, but John stepped up his serve game at 4-5 and put it in overdrive in the tiebreaker, going up 5-1 and finishing it at 7-4.

April 16  John  6-0  6-4    Match time: 1:12
John continues hitting big serves and heavy balls just inside the lines, keeping Don on the defensive and unable to get anything going (especially in the first set).

April 15  John  6-2  6-3    Match time: 1:17
John's serve and whipping forehand were working overtime today painting lines as John wins easily to prevent Don from taking three in a row.  No aces, but plenty of unreturned serves giving John easy points when he needed them.  The optional third set took almost as long as the match (John came back from 3 games down in the third).

April 10  Don  6-4  3-6  6-3    Match time: 2:35
Another excellent match with long points and games (we played 30 points in the last game of the second set).  John made some amazing gets from both sides of the court, but didn't have the legs for the third set as Don kept going for his shots, hitting the corners with good pace and running John from side to side.

April 7  Don  6-3  6-0    Match time: 58 minutes
Don took care of his serve in this first match after an injury layoff, finally getting an easy win.  Plenty of excellent shots from both sides, but John was missing more than usual while Don was Mr. accuracy.  John took the "practice" third set 7-5.

March 25 John 6-3  7-5    Match time: 1:46
Another excellent match with long rallies and close games, but John stays on top with his excellent net play.  Don was up 3-0 in the second, but John came back to tie at 4-4, eventually taking the set and match.  Don may have had the edge if he could have gotten into the third set as he was making John work hard for almost every point near the end of the second set.

March 23 John 4-6  7-5  7-5   Match time: 2:50
Excellent match with long rallies and long games in windy conditions.  The match could have gone either way, but John gets the win despite Don's improved serving and accuracy hitting winners.

March 15 John 6-4  6-2  Match time: 1:10
John takes another short match in two sets, zoning in on his serve in the second set.  Many excellent points and hard hitting to the corners on both sides of the net.

March 13 John 6-1  6-4   Match time: 1:10
After coming off the disabled list John spent three days with his coach preparing for this match, apparently working on his net game as Don was unable to get a ball past John when he came in.  The third set was more competitive, going to John in a tiebreaker.

February 23 Don  6-4  5-7  1-2 John Ret.  Match time: 1:48
Don started figuring out what to do with short balls and had a run of six straight games from 2-2 in the first.  John came back with 5 in a row of his own to go up 5-2 in the second before Don brought it back to 5-5.  Sadly, John tweaked his back going up for an overhead and had to retire in the third.

February 20 Don  5-7  6-3  6-2  Match time: 2:10
John came back to save the first set after Don was up 3-0, but Don managed to control his serve and zone in on the cross court pass as he scores his first win of the season.  John made several beautiful stab volleys on difficult passing shots and was almost perfect on overheads.

February 18 John  6-2  1-6   Match time: 1:10
John spent three days with his coach after coming off the disabled list, apparently working on his net game as Don was unable to to get a ball past John when he came in.  The optional third set was more competitive, also going to John in a tiebreaker.

December 31 John  2-6  6-3  7-6(8-6)  Match time: 2:22
Another excellent match in which many point were decided by inches .  Third set games were long and well played - one game had 11 deuce points.  Don had several match points on John's serve at 5-6 and was up 5-2 in the tiebreak, but John was apparently still hungry despite his lead in this young season.

December 28 John  6-4  3-6  7-5   Match time: 2:43
Don came back from 4-0 to 4-4 in the first, but missed two chances to go up 5-4 by inches.  Excellent points and rallies again throughout the match, but John came up with the big serves and near perfect net play to take third set and the match.  The third set took well over an hour.

December 27 John  6-3  6-4   Match time: 1:36
John makes it three in a row to start the new season as he wins this match with big serves and plenty of whup.  The match was much much closer than the score indicates, with many excellent points and shots.  On break point, for a chance to serve out the second set, Don made a great approach shot, forcing John to float it back to the net.  Don hit a pretty good overhead, but John hit the miracle backwards lunging behind the baseline perfect overhead lob winner.  Don took the optional third set again, which no doubt will be on John's mind when Don finally wins one of the opening sets.

December 23 John  6-3  7-6(8-6)   Match time: 1:49
John's serve gave him the edge in this close match.  Excellent points in general.  Don was up 3-0 in the optional third set when the rains came.

December 22 John  6-2  6-1   Match time: 1:03
John's serve gave Don big trouble in the opening match of the new season, while Don had trouble holding his own.  Don managed to win the optional third set, but its so important to win at least one of the first two sets when playing a three set match...
