2006 Spring Season Tennis Scores
(spring  equinox  to summer solstice)

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit.  The season winner earns a lunch at the local Chinese buffet.
Commentary by Don unless noted.

Spring 2006 matches:  Don 12    John 11

June 19  Don   6-3  6-3    Match time: 1:45

Don wins in straight sets to take the season lead with only 36 hours left in the spring season.  John won the first game of both sets, but each time Don won 4 straight games to take control of the sets.

John 11  Don 11

June 16  John   6-4  1-6  6-4    Match time: 3:10      Don won six games in a row in the second set for a virtual bagel.

John hangs on top tie the season in what was a long morning match despite the short second set.  After an exceedingly long first set Don won the second with a virtual bagel.  But both players were waning towards the end of the third set as John took more care than usual to move Don around rather than going for outright winners.  The next match may decide the season.

Don 11  John 10

June 14  Don   6-4  1-6  7-5    Match time: 2:50

Don noses ahead again with a win in this morning match.  Both players were playing intelligent points most of the time, resulting in long points and games, except for the first four games of the second set when Don had considerable Dixie syndrome troubles.  Don won a key game serving at 1-2 in the third - an eleven deuce game, 3 break points followed by 8 games points...

John 10  Don 10

June 12  John   6-2  7-6(7-5)    Match time: 2:00

John levels the season with a straight set win on a windy afternoon.  Both players had points to win every game in the first set (either a break point or a game point) but John made a several great gets to save what looked like winning shots for Don.  A professional tag-team of pain-in-the-ass kids honed their skills by staging untimely distractions throughout the match...

Don 10  John 9

June 5  Don   6-7(10-8)  6-4  6-1    Match time: 3:15

Don edges ahead in the season race with a win in this long three set match.  Don had three set points in the first set tiebreaker but John muscled his way to net to take the first set.  Don was up 5-2 in the second but John brought it back to 5-4 before Don was able to close out the set.  The third set was Don's all the way, though John denies the bagel by coming back from 0-40 to win his only game in the third.

John 9  Don 9

June 1  John   6-2  6-4    Match time: 1:55

John comes out strong again in this morning match, winning the 1st set fairly easily. I should note that as we were walking towards the courts, there was a large battalion [3 wide, as far as the eye could see] of young children heading towards the park. The other court was invaded, but we held the defensive line between the two courts. Their presence, and stray balls and teachers, got into Don’s game, much more than John’s, and gave John the edge he needed to tie the season up, winning the last three matches in straight sets. John intentionally tried to speed the match up in the 2nd set, while he was on a roll, knowing he needed to avoid a 3rd set. The next match is anyone’s guess, as school is out… Commentary by John

Don 9  John 8

May 30  John   6-1  6-4    Match time: 1:50

John powers his way to a second straight win over Don in this humid evening match.  Don let the first set slip away and could never get ahead in the second despite doing a little better on serve.  John continues to improve at net, not to mention his magic auto lob shot that won several points on the last to games.

Don 9  John 7

May 24  John   6-2  6-3    Match time: 1:40

John breaks Don's 2 match winning streak w/ a decisive win today in this morning match. Don was up 2-1 in the 1st set, before John stormed back and won the next 5 games. Both players were moving well on the court, and made good gets. Don let "Dixie Syndrome" set in in the 2nd, allowing John to capitalize, and win the match.
With not much time left in the spring season, John plans to focus, and better prepare for the next few matches. Commentary by John

Don 9  John 6

May 22  Don   6-4  4-6  7-6(7-4)    Match time: 3:30

Don extends his lead in this long, windy three set marathon marked by frequent lets due to balls from the adjacent court.  John won four in a row from 4-4 in the second set, but Don somehow managed to make a couple passing shots when he needed them.  John was plagued by double faults while Don had none.

Don 8  John 6

May 17  Don   3-6  7-5  7-6(7-4)    Match time: 2:46

Don creeps ahead in the season race after a week of rain as he takes another close 3 set match.  John was 2 points away from the match at 5-4 in the second, but Don rallied to win 3 games in a row for the set.  Both players were feeling FATigued in the third set - even Don was coming to net to shorten points.  John was within 2 points again at 6-5 in the third, but Don scrapped his way into a tiebreaker.  Don has the edge this season in three set matches (6-2) and in tiebreakers (also 6-2).

Don 7  John 6

May 9  John  6-1  6-4    Match time: 1:50       John racks up a virtual bagel with six straight games in the first set

John thwarts Don’s attempt to win 3 in a row in this mid season match. Don win’s the 1st game easily, but John then wins 6 games straight to get the VB. Don goes up 4-2 in the 2nd  set before going Dixie [look-away, look away], allowing John to win the next 4 games, and win the match on his 5th match point. Don has been @ his “fighting weight” all this season, and continues to surprise John by his court speed, while John feels like he’s carrying a 20 # bag of potatoes.  (commentary by John)

Don 7  John 5

May 4-6  Don  2-6  7-6(7-5)  6-1    Match time: 2:30

This match began on the 4th was delayed by rain with John up 3-1. John quickly took the first set, but Don hung around to take the second set in a tiebreaker.  Don managed to keep John off the net in the third as he edges ahead halfway through the season.

Don 6  John 5

May 2  Don  6-4  7-5    Match time: 2:00

Don picked up his net game and hit clean passing shots to edge ahead in the season race.  John came back from 5-2 in the second to 5-5 before Don closed the door.

John 5  Don 5

April 29  John  7-5  6-4    Match time: 1:50

John controlled his over hitting habit to win in straight sets by keeping the ball in play until Don went Dixie.  Don made a few good passing shots but not enough to keep John off the net.

Don 5  John 4

April 27  Don  7-6(7-3)  7-6(7-3)    Match time: 2:05

Don edges ahead with a win in this evening match.  In both sets John came from behind to go up 6-5, but Don managed his own mini comebacks to win in two straight tiebreakers.

John 4  Don 4

April 25  John  6-4  7-5   Match time: 2:15

John enjoyed winning the last match so much that he did it again with the same score line.  Mary helped by bringing smoothies to the court on her way back to work, not realizing that smoothies are to John as spinach to Popeye.

 Don 4  John 3

April 23  John  6-4  7-5   Match time: 2:00

John comes off the disabled list to squeak out a victory over Don on this fine Spring day.  Don had was up 4-2 in the first before John won 4 in a row to take the set.  John made several great volleys near the end of the second set to hang onto victory, knowing Don would have the edge if it went to a third set.

 Don 4  John 3

April 13  Don  4-6  7-6(8-6)  6-3  Match time: 2:45

Don makes it three in a row with another three set win on a windy 80 degree afternoon.  John had match point at 6-5 in the second set after coming back from 3-5, but Don fended it off and took the second set in a tiebreaker.  Don jumped up 2-0 in the third and was able to hold the lead throughout the set.

 Don 3  John 2

April 11  Don  6-7(7-5)  6-4  6-3  Match time: 2:50

During the match Don saved a couple games from 0-40 down and another two from 15-40 down to eek out a win in this late afternooon match (the third set was played under the lights).

Don 2  John 2

April 9  Don  6-3  7-6(7-5)   Match time: 2:20       Don bags a virtual bagel, winning 6 games ina row from 4-3 in the first to 4-0 in the second

Don keeps the season even with a straight set win on a sunny Sunday.  Don came within a point of going Hawaiian (5-0) on John in the second set, but John found fought back to go up 6-5.  Don saved 5 set points to force the second set tiebreaker.

John 2  Don 1

April 4  John  6-2  1-6  6-3   Match time: 2:00       John earns a virtual bagel won six games in a row from 0-2 in the first set

John pull out a win on a windy day in a match that could have gone either way.  John earned a vb in the first set, but Don came back in the second, going Hawaiian (5-0) before John fended off bagel in the second.  The swirling wind helped and hindered both players.

Don 1  John 1

March 29  Don  6-7(9-7)  6-3  1-0 John ret    Match time: 2:15

This match was postponed from early afternoon till evening, and played under the lights.  Don was hitting his passing shots well and had a 5-2 lead in the first set before John stormed back.  Don abandoned his glasses in the second set (too much fog on the lenses due to high humidity and falling temperature) and started playing zen tennis.  Sensing that John was FATigued Don ran John mercilessly from side to side in the opening game of the third set...

John 1  Don 0

March 27  John  6-3  4-6  6-2    Match time: 2:20

John starts the season with a win, running Don hard even though John knew Don hadn't slept well the night before.  Don hit a rare ace out wide and made several difficult volleys, but John was a virtual wall at net as he frustrated Don's attempts to pass or lob.
