2006 Summer Season Tennis Scores
(summer solstice to fall equinox)

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit.  The season winner earns a lunch at the local Chinese buffet.
Commentary by Don unless noted.

Summer 2006 matches:  John 11    Don 5

Sept. 19  John  7-5  6-3    Match time: 2:00

John comes away with yet another win to close the season above the coveted 2 to 1 ratio.  Despite the loss, Don was encouraged by his two aces and is looking forward to lunch and perusing the tennis magazines John has been reading...

John 10 Don 5

Sept. 11,14  Don  7-6(7-4)   3-6  6-3    Match time: 2:30

Don finally manages to stop the Mace train after a two week layoff working out a kink in his lower back.  The match was suspended due to rain after the first two sets (both players welcomed the rain since both were coming back from injuries).  The third set was one of the better sets we've played recently, decided by a single break.

John 10 Don 4

Aug. 25  John  6-0  4-6 6-3    Match time: 2:45

John continues his roll with a fourth straight win.  Don was ready to resign with a stiff back after John won the first 8 games, but his back loosened up and Don made a comeback in the second, moving John around and wearing him down.  Then the lawn crew appeared on the backcourt fence with three weedwhackers, prompting a 20 minute break.  John lay down for a rest while Don tried to keep loose by hitting server (probably no the best idea with a sore back).  When play resumed Don was tight and John was well rested...

John 9 Don 4

Aug. 20  John  6-3  6-4    Match time: 1:40

John starts out strong again in this evening match, going up 5-2 in the 1st set. The second set was closer and both players were going for the lines, leading to several line call disputes. Danny was there, but outside the court fence, and unable to help either player w/ the calls.  Commentary by John

John 8 Don 4

Aug. 12  John  5-7  7-6(7-4)  7-5    Match time: 2:52

John regains the coveted 2-1 margin with another three set win.  Don came back from 5-2 down to take the first, then let John jump ahead in the second.  Don came back again, but lost the second in a tiebreaker.  John jumped out 3-0 in the third and again Don got back to 5-5, but John is hard to beat when he gets close to the finish line.

John 7 Don 4

Aug. 10  John  7-5  2-6  7-6(7-3)    Match time: 2:30

John comes away w/ a victory in this 3 setter that could have gone either way. John comes out strong, and stays ahead of Don in the all important 1st set, avoiding a tie-breaker, and winning 7-5. Don takes control of the second, winning w/ crisp passing shots, and good serving.  John digs deep and finds a much needed energy reserve to start the 3rd set, going up 4-1, and 5-2. Don then does the same winning long rallies, and wins the next 3 games to even it up @ 5-5, and 6-6, forcing the TB. John can't believe the match is slipping away after having a nice cushion lead, and very much wants to avoid a tie-breaker, as Don lately has been on the winning side of TB's. Somehow, John keeps it together , while Don blinks, winning the TB 7-3, and the match.  Commentary by John

John 6 Don 4

Aug. 8  Don  4-6  6-7(7-4)  6-2    Match time: 3:30

John jumped ahead by two breaks and easily held the lead through the first set.  John was within two points of the match, serving at 6-5 in the second, but Don broke and won the tiebreaker to force a third set.  John didn't have much left for the third set, though he did make a short run about midway through the set.

John 6 Don 3

Aug. 3  John  6-0  6-7(7-5)  6-4    Match time: 3:00

John starts strong again in this morning match meant to beat the heat.  Don saved a match point serving at 4-5 in the second but gave away too many points due to the Dixie syndrome.  John made solid passing shots and volleys to close out the match as the temperature broke 90...

John 5  Don 3

Aug. 1  Don  2-6  6-1  7-5    Match time: 2:40

John powered through the first set easily, but Don found his passing shot and went Hawaiian (5-0) on John before John saved a game to avert bagel.  John picked up his game again in the third and though both players were much FATigued from the heat factor Don managed to serve out the set after breaking at 5-5.

John 5  Don 2

July 24  John   6-3  6-3    Match time: 1:45

Don couldn't outlast John's power as John builds his lead with a straight set win in this evening match.  Play was complicated by frequent lets (due to a gang of kids on the next court).

John 4  Don 2

July 20  John   6-3  6-0    Match time: 1:30

Don started out well in the first but quickly fell apart (heat frustration apparently affecting his brain).  Meanwhile, John was almost flawless, especially on lobs.

John 3  Don 2

July 9  Don   1-6  7-5  6-4    Match time: 2:30

John cruised through the first set and a half, going up 3-0 (two breaks) in the second set.  Don was hitting the ball well, but John was flawless on overheads, volleys and lob winners.  But Don chipped away at John's lead, getting a break back then holding at 3-5 (on a volley that couldn't have been sweeter) to force John to serve it out.  John flinched and Don went on to complete a virtual bagel.  John very nearly made a dead man's comeback in  the third, staggering to 4-4 before Don was able to put it away.

John 3  Don 1

July 7  John   6-3  4-6  6-4    Match time: 2:45

John survives a third set after cramping and taking a "medical timeout" at 5-3 following a long point.  Both players were fatigued from a long doubles match the previous day, but John can be tenacious when he gets near the finishing line.

John 2  Don 1

July 3  Don   7-5  6-2    Match time: 1:50

Don gets on the board in the summer season with a convincing two set evening win.  John had 40-0 serving at 5-5 in the first, but Don managed to come back to take the game and the set on the strength of several sweet passing shots.  Both John and Don were playing with a mild handicap (Jägermeister for John, home brew for Don).

John 2  Don 0

June 28  John   6-4  6-3    Match time: 1:41

John wins another match in straight sets on a windy day as Wimbledon moves to the second round.  Don broke John only once (in the first set).  John had one ace.

John 1  Don 0

June 19  John   6-4  6-4    Match time: 1:50

John wins the season opener in straight sets to help erase the memory of last season.  Don had some problems with the Dixie syndrome, but John won primarily by playing smart and hitting well placed shots rather than going for glory.
