2006 Winter Season Tennis Scores
(winter solstice to spring equinox)
These scores really don't have anything to
do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of
friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt
to stay reasonably fit. The season winner earns a
lunch at the local Chinese buffet.

Don pulls out a win in the last match of the winter
2006 season, using the match to work on correcting
his Dixie reflex since John has already clinched the
season. |

March 16 John 5-7 6-4 6-4
Match time: 3:05
 |
|
Don saved 8 break points at 5-5 as he came from behind
to take the first set. But John turned the
tables, winning 6 games in a row from 2-4 down in
the second for a virtual bagel. This win
effectively puts and end to Don's quest for the
buffet prize as the season draws to a close. |
John 10 Don 7
|
March 8-9 Don 6-3 6-4
Match time: 2:10 |
|
Don kept the Dixie syndrome at bay to win in straight
sets. The match was suspended due to rain at
2-3 in the second set. On resumption the
following day the second set went to 4-4 before Don
got the break and served out the match. |
John 10 Don 6
|
March 5 John 6-0 6-4
Match time: 1:50
 |
|
John comes out strong, winning the first set 6-0. Don had points to win on his
serve, and break John on his, but Dixie Syndrome set in. John goes up 5-0 in the
second, but visions of twin bagels cloud his ability to pull it off, as Don wins
4 in a row. John finally pulls out the victory @ 6-4, knowing that if Don can
take it to a 3rd set, it’s likely he will win the match.

March 1 John 6-4 7-6(7-1)
Match time: 2:30 |

have any left for the tiebreaker.

February 25 Don 6-4 7-6(7-5)
Match time: 2:00 |
|
Don draws to within 2 with a win on a
windy day (officially FWF -
fargin' wind factor). Don was one game
shy of virtual bagel and seemed to be running away
with the second set at 5-1 when John came alive to
win 5 in a row. Don barely averted John's vb
in forcing the second set tiebreaker.
|
John 8 Don 5
|
February 23 Don 3-6 6-3 7-6(10-8)
Match time: 2:55 |
|
Don wins the third set tiebreaker to
keep his hopes alive with 4 weeks left in the
season. Another windy day, but Don managed to
win a few net exchanges and make key passing shots
when he needed them. John saved 6 match points
and had one of his own in the tiebreaker before Don
closed it out.

John 8 Don 4
|
February 16 John 6-7(7-3) 7-5 6-3
Match time: 2:45
 |
|
Don took the ever important first set,
but John sticks around in the second and comes back
from 0-3 in the third to build a commanding lead
with less than 5 weeks left in the season. The
wind was blustering about, giving Don much more
trouble in the third than John.

John 7 Don 4
|
February 10 Don 3-6 7-5 6-4
Match time: 3:05 |
|
Don finally stops John winning streak
in this long cold weather match that finished under
the lights. John saved 15 break points before
Don was finally able to break late in the second set
to force a third set. Don saved 4 break points
while serving for the match.

February 2 John 7-5 6-3 Match time:

|
John rolls through another match by,
staging a comeback from 3-5 in the first set,
giving all he had to take the second to avoid
playing a third.
|
John 6 Don 3
January 30 John 6-4 6-1 Match time:
1:35
 |
|
John continues to confound Don with
aggressive net play, extending his winning streak to
3 in a row. Don may need to re-watch some of
the Australian Open...
|
John 5 Don 3
|
January 28 John 6-3 6-2 Match time:
1:45 |
|
Juiced up from watching the Australian
Open, both Don and John were hitting excellent shots
and tracking down a lot of balls. But John's
power got the better of Don, despite s couple of
sweet backhand passing shots.

John 4 Don 3
January 22 John 3-6
6-1 6-2 Match time: 2:00
 |
|
Don thought he was in position to win
this match after taking the opening set, but John
went on a spree, cranking out 8 games in a row to
close the second set and go up 3-0 in the third.
|
Don 3 John 3
|
January 19 Don 7-6(7-5)
6-4 Match time: 2:00 |
|
John won 4 in a row to come back from
a 5-1 deficit in the first and was up 4-2 in the
tiebreaker, but Don hit several sweet passing shots
to close out the ever important first set.
|
John 3 Don 2
|
January 12 Don 6-7(8-6)
6-3 6-2 Match time: 2:45 |
|
No breaks in the first set, a rarity
for us. John came back from down 5-2 in the
first set tiebreaker. Not to be denied, Don
took this match to a third set where the FATigue
factor slowed John enough to give Don the win.
|
John 3 Don 1
January 8 John 6-3
6-2 Match time: 1:30
 |
|
John was feeling better as he rolled
over Don in two straight sets. Don narrowly
averted a bagel in the second, saving a game thanks
to a couple perfect accidental drop shots.
|
John 2 Don 1
|
January 4 Don 6-7(7-2)
6-3 6-4 Match time: 2:30 |
|
Don finally wins one in the winter
season after restringing his new racquets and
talking John into playing when he was a little sick.
Don was cruising through the third when John managed
a comeback from 4-0 to 4-4 in the second. John
had triple break point to go up 5-4 in the third,
but Don managed his own comeback and held onto a
long games after saving a total of 5 break points.
|
John 2 Don 0
|
January 1 John 6-3 7-6(7-3)
Match time: 1:45 |
|
John makes it four in a row as Don
tries out new racquets, only to discover they were
strung extremely loose (like about 20 lb too loose).
|
John 1 Don 0
|
December 27 John 6-4
7-5 Match time: 2:00 |
|
John continues to dominate in cold
weather in this extremely close match. John
just managed to hold on and serve out the second
set, winning on his fourth match point after having
saved 4 break points. Both players
figured Don would easily have won had the match gone
three sets, as John expended the last of his
reserves in the final game.
