2007 Fall Season Tennis Scores
(fall equinox to winter solstice )

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit.  The season winner earns a lunch at the local Chinese buffet.
Commentary by Don unless noted.

Dec. 21  Don   6-4  6-2  Match time: 1:45
Don ends the season with a win.  The first set was close, but Don won a long game at 4-4 then broke to take the set.  The second set was all Don as he focused on moving John around the court.  John saved several match points before Don closed the door.

John 11  Don 8

Dec. 18  John   6-4  6-2  Match time: 1:40
John most likely closes the door on Don’s hope of wining the fall season, as he finishes on top, w/ mirrored results of the last match. Don goes up 3-0 in the 1st set, but John derails the A-train, wining the next 6 of 7 games to close the set 6-4. The 2nd set was all John, as he comes up w/ some good ball placement, and semi-solid net play. He closes the match winning 6-2, and can almost taste the buffet. The Ft. Myers trip was canceled, and good [clear and over 40] weather days are now fewer.

John 10  Don 8

Dec. 11  Don   6-4  6-2  Match time: 1:45
Don keeps his season hopes alive with a straight set win.  John started strong, taking the first three games, but Don came right back with four of his own.  The second set was more competitive than the score indicates, but Don was able to keep John off the net and take a few balls out of the air for the win.  The tour heads south to Ft. Meyers Beach for the final week of the season.

John 10  Don 7

Dec. 1  John   7-6(7-5)  6-4   Match time: 1:55
Both players started out well, despite the 40 degree temp, and lack of good bounce from the balls. In the first set John was up 40-15 in a game that would have given him a 5-2 lead, but Don took the game away from him, and the 1st set was decided w/ a tie-breaker. The 2nd set was close, but John comes away w/ the win.

John 9  Don 7

Nov. 28  Don   6-4  7-5   Match time: 1:45
Don wins another in straight sets.  John made a run in the second set, going up 5-3, but Don confused John by coming to net and taking overheads out of the air (not to mention making a couple half-volley feel-good flick-shot winners).

John 9  Don 6

Nov. 25  Don   6-4  6-4   Match time: 1:36
Don wins in straight sets in this cold weather match to keep his buffet hopes alive.  John had recently been watching Sampras beat Federer, so Don had to channel the A-train, keeping John on the move and angling passing shots when given the chance.

John 9  Don 5

Nov. 20  John   6-2  6-7(8-6)  7-6(7-5)   Match time: 2:56
John took the first set easily in 32 minutes, but Don refused to go away, saving match 3 points in a long (1:13) second set.  Both players struggled with fatigue in the third set which was played under the lights (another hour and 12 minutes).  Don saved another 2 match points from 0-40 at 6-5 and another 2 in the tiebreaker, but John held on to win the last point...

John 8  Don 5

Nov. 17  Don   6-3  3-6  6-4   Match time: 2:40
This was a hard fought match, with both players moving well and running the other around.  Don jumped ahead 5-2 in the third set after a game in which he won 4 points at net, all overheads into the deuce service box setup by deep approach shots.  John attempted a comeback but Don weathered the storm.

John 8  Don 4

Nov. 11  John   6-4  2-6  7-5   Match time: 2:45
John stops Don's quest for a 3-peat, and also regains a 2:1 ratio in this tight afternoon match. The 1st set could have gone either way. Don dominated the 2nd w/ crisp passing shots, and making John expend a lot of energy by running him side-to-side. The 3rd set, and match was decided by a few critical points. Luckily for John, [because Don has a better tie-break record] Don was having trouble judging the depth of some short shots John made in the final game, and John takes the 3rd 7-5. Commentary by John

John 7  Don 4

Nov. 3  Don   6-2  3-6  7-6(7-2)   Match time: 2:40
Don makes it two in a row, cutting John's win/loss ratio below 2/1.  John forgot his rackets and had to play with one of Don's low powered non self-aiming rackets. John seemed to be adjusting well, taking the second set and jumping out front in the third.  Don saved a match point serving at 4-5 and held easily at 5-6 to get into the tiebreaker.

John 7  Don 3

Nov. 1  Don   6-3  6-3   Match time: 1:45  Don won nine straight from 0-2 in the first through 5-0 in the second  Don wen Hawaiian 5-0 in the second set
Don comes out of the gate strong, and goes up 2-0, but John wins the next 3 games. Then Don wins an amazing 9 games in a row from 2-3 in the 1st set to 5-0 in the 2nd [going Hawaiian]. John is frustrated at the thought of a vb becoming a fully toasted 6-0 bagel w/ cream cheese. He manages to put some pressure on Don , and wins 3 games before Don closes the door on him, winning 6-3.  Commentary by John

John 7  Don 2

Oct. 30  John    1-6  6-2  6-4   Match time: 2:25  Don won six straight games after dropping the opening game
Don hit passing shot from everywhere during the first set, though John made him work for every point.  Errors crept into Don's game as John hit harder and harder in the third set.

John 6  Don 2

Oct. 27  Don    6-3  7-6(7-3)  Match time: 1:45
Don cut John's win/loss ration by a factor of 2 with this much needed win.  Don got up in the second 4-0 and was 2 points away from simultaneous vb and Hawaiian, but John rallied and hit his way into a tiebreaker before Don could close the door.

John 6  Don 1

Oct. 18  John    6-4  7-5  Match time: 2:15
John wins again despite Don showing signs of breaking through the Dixie syndrome with numerous well placed passing shots.

John 5  Don 1

Oct. 16  John    7-5  7-5  Match time: 2:00    John won six games in a row from 2-5 in the first to 1-0 in the second
John climbed out of a 2-5 hole in the first as Don continues to struggle with the Dixie Syndrome and John's low rider power shots.

John 4  Don 1

Oct. 8  John    4-6  6-4  6-2  Match time: 2:48    Don won six games in a row after being down 4-0 in the first set
John comes out of the gate strong, winning the first 4 games. Then Don prepares a Virtual Bagel Breakfast for John, by winning the next 6 games in a row, and takes the 1st set 6-4. The 2nd set was a must win set for John, and he pulls it out 6-4, and both players prepare for the 3rd set as the temperature hits the 90 degree mark. The 3rd set started out as if it could go either way, as it was all even at 2-2. But then a combo of hitting errors by Don allowed John to see the finish line in the distance, as he won the final 4 game to take the 3rd set 6-2.

John 3  Don 1

Oct. 5  John    6-0  3-6  7-5  Match time: 2:45   John won the first eight games John won six in a row to save the match
John comes back to win after Don comes back in this totally weird score line.  John could do no wrong the first eight games, hitting with "power in control" as the advertising on his racquet claims.  Don won the next 5, then the set.  John won the first game of the third, then Don took the next five and had 40-15 for the match and vb.  A wayward Walmart truck picked that moment to act as if it was backing onto the court, and when play resumed Don had lost his focus, dropping three match points.  Encouraged, John once again could do no wrong as he swung away.  Don hit the wall as John controlled a particularly grueling point in his game for 5-5, and John coasted home with a vb in the third.

John 2  Don 1

Oct. 2  John    6-3  6-4  Match time: 1:45
John comes out on top in straight sets in this early evening match. Both players were hitting well, and had good rallies going. Our “Eagle Eyed” friend Danny showed up late in the 1st set, and helped w/ some of the line calls. He stayed for the remainder of the match, watching Don go up 3-0 in the 2nd set, but Don would only win 1 more game after John was blinded by a parked Fed-Ex truck making a delivery.

John 1  Don 1

Sept. 28  John  3-6  6-2  6-3  Match time: 2:45
Don came back from 0-2 to take the first set, but John got his groove on in the second.  Don took a fall that scraped his knee early in the third, using the adrenalin rush to win the next three games.  Don was up 3-1 in the third and had 5 breakpoints for 4-1, but after John held he got on another roll to close the set with 5 straight games.

Don 1  John 0

Sept. 25 Don  7-6(7-5)  2-6  6-3  Match time: 3:08
Don takes the opening match of the fall season in a scorcher of a match.  John steamrolled through the second set after dropping the opener in a tight tiebreaker.  John hit the wall as temperatures in the 90's sapped both players energy.  Don had trouble staying focused on moving John around as John fought to stay on the court in a third set decided by a single break.
