2007 Winter Season Tennis Scores
(spring equinox to summer solstice )
These scores really don't have anything to
do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of
friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt
to stay reasonably fit. The season winner earns a

 |
|
John closes the season with another win as Don
couldn't find an answer to John's power. Don
was up 3-1, but John came up with a virtual bagel.
John even won the optional third set... |
18-4
|
June 16 John 3-6 6-3 6-4
Match time:
2:45 |
|
John wins again in what was a high level match (for
us). Both players were made excellent gets and
were placing the ball well, but Don missed a couple
keys points in the third. |
17-4
|
June 14 John 6-2 7-6(7-5)
Match time:
1:45 |

Don saved 4 match points to get into a second set
tiebreaker, but couldn't close out the set as John
pads his 4-1 ratio with another win.. |
16-4
|
June 11 John 4-6 6-3
7-5
Match time:
2:30 |
|
John attains the dreaded 4-1 ratio after Don drops a
match point on a Dixie error. Both players
were making excellent gets throughout the match, but
in the third set John hit running winners from each
side on approach shots Don had placed going away in
the corners. |
15-4
|
June 8 John 6-3
6-2
Match time:
1:15 |
|
John makes short work of Don with blistering forehands
and slice shots on a tee that gave Don way too much
time to him them into the net... |
14-4
|
June 6 John 7-6(7-4)
6-4
Match time:
2:10 |
|
John ekes out another win as the flying flip flop
circus on the next court destroyed any chance of
either player staying focused. Don did pretty
good tracking down John's overhead shots, saving a
total of 4 in one particularly long point that ended
when John's fifth overhead went into the fence.
Not long after the triple f circus departed a park
visitor suffered a seizure requiring an ambulance... |
13-4
|
June 4 John 6-3 7-6(7-5)
Match time:
1:45 |
|
Don was in this match all the way, but John racks up
another win cracking big serves, backing them up at
net and basking in the warmth of
benevolent net cord gods. |
12-4
|
May 25 Don 6-2 3-6 6-3 Match time:
2:10 |
|
Don won the first set easily but John came back to
take the second and go up 2-0 in the third before
Don got back to business by winning five in a row
(John saved a point for vb) |
12-3
|
May 23 John 6-4 4-6 7-6(7-4) Match time:
3:00 |
|
John stages a comeback from 1-4 in the third set to
force a tiebreaker. Don had chances but
couldn't put it away. |
12-3
|
May 21 John 6-4 6-4 Match time:
1:45 |
|
John dealt better with the distraction of the three
ring circus on the next court. John used all
he had to close it in straight sets and would have
been easy pickings if Don taken it to three. |
10-3
|
May 18 Don 6-4 6-2 Match time:
1:25 |
|
Don recovers from a break down in the first set to
finally stop the runaway Mace train... |
10-2
|
May 14 John 6-4 3-6 6-1 Match time:
2:10
 |
|
John wins again despite a good showing by Don in the
second set. Most games in the first set went
to deuce multiple times and several had 6-10 deuces,
but John came away with the first set on the
strength of the only service hold. The third
set was all John and his magic self-aiming
overpowered el-mondo grosso racquet (somehow, the
wind seemed to be at John's back no matter which
side of the court he was on...) |
9-2
|
May 9 John 5-7 6-4 6-2 Match time:
3:00
 |
|
Don saved 11 set points on the way to a come from
behind virtual bagel in the first set, but John (aka
Mr. Net-man) held on to win yet another match, this
time without the wind to help... |
8-2
|
May 6 John 7-5 7-5
Match time: 2:20 |
|
John continues his string of straight set wins as Don
continues to struggle with the Dixie syndrome and
the wind factor |
7-2
|
May 2 John 6-2 6-4
Match time: 2:00 |
|
John wins again in straight sets as the wind was once
again his friend (somehow the wind always seemed to
be mostly at John's back, no matter which side of
the court he was on). Don made a mini comeback
from 4-1 to 4-4 in the second, but all for naught |
6-2
|
Apr. 27 John 6-1 7-6
Match time: 2:00
 |
|
John wins again in straight sets on another very windy
day. The first set took much longer than the
score would indicate as both players made excellent
gets resulting in long points and long games.
Don served for the second set but John was antsy to
get on the road and stepped up his game to break.
At 3-3 in the tiebreaker Don hit an overhead that
John half volleyed from the baseline for a passing
shot winner, after which it was all John... |
5-2
|
Apr. 17 John 6-1 6-2
Match time: 1:35 |
|
John takes a commanding lead in the spring season
after powering his way to another win on a windy
day. Don showed a few signs of life early in
the second set, but couldn't adapt to both the wind
and John's power, |
4-2
|
Apr. 10 John 3-6 7-5 6-2
Match time: 2:45
 |
|
Don controlled the match to take the first set and go
up 5-2 in the second. On his first match point
(serving at 5-3) Don made the mistake of playing a
ball that was a little long after John made a jaw
dropping get. Don gave up another match point
overhitting a put away, and next thing you know John
had won the second set and was swinging free.
John easily won the third set by overpowering Don
(apparently his racket helps aim the bal, according
to the literature..). |
3-2
|
Apr. 2 John 6-1 6-4 Match
time: 1:30 |
|
John made short work of the first set on this very
windy day. Don had points for 5-5 in the
second, but John used the extra power of his new
Flexpoint to close out the match in straight sets. |
2-2
|
Mar. 28 Don 4-6 7-5 6-3 Match
time: 3:10 |
|
We played two sets on Mar. 28 before John had to go to
jury duty. John too the fist and was up a
break in the second, but Don realized he could go
all out in the second because the third set would be
delayed. Don came out strong on Mar. 30 to
take the third set. |
2-1
|
Mar. 27 John 6-4 7-5 Match
time: 2:00 |
|
John wins again in straight sets. Rain delayed
the match early in the first set, after which Don
went up 4-2 only to see John win 4 in a row to take
the set. Don was up in the second 4-2 and even
had a set point at 5-4, but John prevailed. |
1-1
|
Mar. 25 John 6-2 3-6
6-1 Match time: 2:00 |
|
John easily wins this relatively short 3 set match as
Don's bad habits reasserted themselves in force.
John won 5 in a row after Don took the opening game.
Don made adjustments and came back to win the second
set, but John dominated net in the third set to go
Hawaiian (5-0), coming within two points of bagel. |
1-0
|
Mar. 22 Don 7-6(10-8)
6-4 Match time: 2:30
|
|
Don takes the first match of the new season as
swirling wind befuddles both players. Don
saved 5 set points before finally taking the first
set. John went up 2-0 in the second before Don
ran of 5 in a row. John saved virtual bagel
and got back in the second set before Don closed it
out. If you
