2007 Summer Season Tennis Scores
(summer solstice to fall equinox)
These scores really don't have anything to
do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of
friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt
to stay reasonably fit. The season winner earns a
lunch at the local Chinese buffet.

John powers his way to another in the last match of
the summer season. Don had set points for the
first set, but John came up with a handle shot
half-volley winner under pressure. John had
5-2 in the third, but Don came back and had
breakpoint for 5-5. John made another great
volley to save the break point. |

John comes out of the gate strong going Hawaiian (5-0)
before Don gets on the board to prevent the bagel.
Second set is all Don, as John blinked, and Don got
on a roll wining 6-3. Third set was up for grabs,
but John’s aggressiveness at net, and taking big
swings [teeing off] at Don’s second serve earns him
another hula dancer, going up 5-0. Don made an
effort at a comeback, saving match points, but John
finally iced the cake at 6-2. There’s a chill in the
air indicating the summer season is coming to a
close. The buffet is in the bag for John, since he’s
sitting on a fat cushion….

Don weathers the first set storm to bagel in the
second, starting his comeback as cheerleaders
practiced to the Rocky theme on a neighboring court.
John won the first three the games in the third, but
Don found another level to take the next six for a
vb. The 3-3 game went to 11 deuces, and
several other games went at least 6 deuces amidst
many excellent points. |

Don starts out strong, and jumps out to a 5-3 lead in the 1st set,
but John comes back wining the next 7 games in a row. Both players were hitting
well, and having US Open visions, as they went for passing shots, and played w/
aggression. Don’s serving showed improvement, and John’s lobs were finding the
baseline when Don tried to put net pressure on in the 2nd.

August 19 John 2-6 6-3 6-4

Don started well again, jumping out 4-0 with a point
to go Hawaiian, but John started putting the
pressure on Don in the second with deep shots at
full-on grunt. Don's serve made things easier
for John in the third. |

Don got off to a good start but John picked up the
pace in the second set. Don hit way too many
double faults as John started teeing off on second
serves. |

This match was started on July 17 in Dayton, but
quickly rained out with Don up 3-1 in the first set.
Resumed in Spencer on July 22 with new balls.
This match became our first 3-cans of balls match
after a misunderstanding resulted in a freshly
opened can of new balls being available for the
third set. |

Don hits on triple 7 in a long two set win to halt
John's winning streak at 13 matches. Don
continued to improve his footwork and stroke while
keeping the Dixie reflex ("look away") at bay. |

July 9 John 6-2 4-6 7-5
Match time:

John continues his new racquet streak, though not as
easily as he has lately. Despite the loss Don
showed encouraging progress in breaking the Dixie
reflex and improved control of his backhand as he
had a field day passing John down the line and cross
court. |

July 7 John 6-4 6-4
Match time:

Don was in both sets at 4-4 but John was able to
overpower and break Don's serve to end each set.
Both players made some great gets on on long points. |

July 4 John 7-6(8-4) 6-0
Match time:

Don did well to stay in the first set and even had a
set point in the tiebreaker, but John is hard to
stop if he wins the first set and starts to swing
free and easy with his flexpoint seemingly self
aiming racquet... |

July 2 John 2-6 6-4 7-5
Match time:
2:45 |
|
Don looked sharp in the opening set but the fat-i-gue
factor combined with the mental strain of trying to
get John to start points in the correct court
allowed the Dixie Syndrome to creep into Don's game
late in the third set. |

June 26 John 6-4 4-6 7-5
Match time:
3:05 |

John comes away w/ a win on this hot morning match.
Don was up 5-3 in the 3rd set, and had 2 match
points at 5-4. John was fat-a-qued [fatigued], and
not moving very well in the 3rd, as both players ran
out of liquids to replenish themselves. But after
saving match points, John went to the well, dug up
some extra energy, and focused on a distant light,
winning the 3rd 7-5. Luckily for John, Don suffered
from the Dixie Syndrome @ the same time [look-away,
look-away]

before John closed the door. |
