2007 Winter Season Tennis Scores
(winter solstice to spring equinox )

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit.  The season winner earns a lunch at the local Chinese buffet.
Commentary by Don unless noted.

Feb. 24  John  6-1  6-7(3-7)  8-6  Match time: 3:15

After nearly a month of cold weather we decided 40 degrees was warm enough to play.  John took the first set easily but Don worked his way into the match in the second set after being down a break early in the set.  Don had points for 3-0 in the third, but John took the game and four more to go up 5-2.  Don saved 5 match points while winning 4 in a row to go up 6-5.   For some absurd reason we decided to play games rather than a tiebreaker (even though both of us were dragging).

Don 4  John 2

Jan. 27  Don  6-1  2-6  7-5   Match time: 2:45     Don won six games in a row from 2-1 in the first through 2-0 in the second    John scored 6 games in a row from 0-2 to win the second set and another to start the third set

Don went Gonzo in a good way (footwork and hitting to the corners) to win the first set and go up 2-0 in the second.  Then Don began channeling the old Gonzo (over hitting) while John settled down and picked up his net game.  The third set was up for grabs, but Don managed to break at 5-5, retrieving an overhead smash at net with with an overhead block-shot lob to the corner to get to break point.

Don 3  John 2

Jan. 7  Don  6-4  6-1   Match time: 1:30

Don makes it two in a row with another straight set win.  Once again their were a lot of long points, but Don wasn't going Dixie as much as usual and managed to keep John off the net except for a spell in the first set.

Don 2  John 2

Jan. 4  Don  6-4  6-3   Match time: 2:00

Don comes away w/ the win on this first match of 07. His serve has picked up over the last few matches. Also, his ground strokes are deeper w/ more pace, keeping John from coming to net as much as he would like to. This combination is leading to longer points, rallies, and games. Both players agree that we played our longest point, and longest game in this match [longest point was not in our longest game].  Don seemed to have “extra hustle” today, getting to balls John thought were going to be point ending shots. John knows it’s going to take more than new shoes this season to have a edge on Don.  (Commentary by John)

 John 2  Don 1

Dec. 30  John  6-3  6-4   Match time: 1:45

John wins in straight sets despite better than usual serving from Don (no double faults).

Don 1  John 1

Dec. 28  Don  6-4  4-6  6-3   Match time: 2:15

Don did a good job of keeping John off the net with passing shots down both lines.

John 1 Don 0

Dec. 23  John  6-2  6-3   Match time: 1:40

John starts the new season with another straight set win over Don.  Don was able to break twice in each set, but was only able to hold his own server once in the entire match...
