2008 Spring Season Tennis Scores
(spring equinox to summer solstice)

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit.  The season winner earns a lunch at the local Chinese buffet.

Spring 2008 matches:  John 10   Don 5

June 20 John  6-4  6-7(10-8)  6-3  Match time: 2:55
John achieves the coveted 2-1 ratio on the last day of the season.  John was cruising at 5-2 in the second after a close first set, but Don saved 2 match points at 3-5 and another 5 in the tiebreaker (including 3 in a row).  But John jumped up 4-0 in the third (by not making every shot a power shot and pulling out the touch shots including a sweet eyedropper) and was able to fend off Don's run of 3 games in a row to close the match.    (Commentary by Don)

 John 9  Don 5

June 15 John  7-6(8-6)  6-0  Match time: 2:00
John comes tantalizingly close to the coveted 2/1 ratio with another win.  Don could easily have won the first set (and did win the third set played for fun) but the second set was all John as he found a hard hitting zone that kept Don on his heels.    (Commentary by Don)

 John 8  Don 5

June 2 John  6-4  6-4  Match time: 1:45
John comes away with the victory in this high level match as both players were hitting the ball with plenty of power and precision.  The match could have gone either way, but John put just enough pep into his ground strokes to force too many errors from Don's side...    (Commentary by Don)

 John 7  Don 5

May 30 Don  6-4  6-7(7-2)  6-4  Match time: 3:00
Don denies John’s second attempt to secure a 2:1 ratio in this spring season, by staying focused, and making good match play. It was a very long match w/ the 3rd set [and the early near noon heat] taking it’s toll on John, and his lack of fitness. Don was hitting his cross-court backhand nearly perfect (editor's note: also his down the line backhand), as he racked up winners passing John as he made his approach to the net.  (Commentary by John)

 John 7  Don 4

May 25 John  6-1  6-2  Match time: 1:15
John broke a string on the second point of the match but, inexplicably, did not have his spare racket, so Don offered his spare to John.  Don won the opening game, then John won ten in a row as he apparently couldn't hit a ball out with Don's racket.  Don will definitely re-string John's racket before the next match...  (Commentary by Don)

 John 6  Don 4

May 22 John  5-7  6-3  7-6(8-6)  Match time: 3:15
Once again, Don comes out strong, winning the 1st 4 games, and almost obtained a Hawaiian (5-0). He was playing exceptionally well, going up 5-2 in the first set. John knows how crucial the 1st set is, puts the focus cap on, and ties it up 5-5, but Don closes the door by winning the next two games. Don was up 3-1 in the 2nd set, but John won the next 5 games to take the 2nd set (and the 1st game in the 3rd to get the virtual bagel). John goes up 5-3 in the 3rd, but Don refused to go away, as we head to a 3rd set tie-breaker. Luckily for John, he goes up 5-1 before switching sides, because Don brought it back to 6-6, w/ either player being within 2 points of winning the match. John wins the next 2 points, and the match, denying Don of the season tie. Stay tuned as the summer heat, and sweatfests are just around the corner. (Commentary by John)

 John 5  Don 4

May 6 Don  1-6  7-6(7-4)  6-3  Match time: 2:55
John comes out strong winning the 1st 5 games, before Don takes the 6th to prevent a bagel. The 2nd set was close, but Don pulls ahead in the tie-breaker, winning the 2nd set. Don made John put a lot into the 2nd set, by running him side to side, and as a result he tanked out and had little left for the 3rd set. Don called on the powers of “Ugg” in the 3rd to cement the victory, and deny John the coveted 2-1 ratio that was within his grasp.  (Commentary by John)

 John 5  Don 3

May 1 John  7-6(7-4)  6-3  Match time: 2:25
John wins again on the strength of a good night's rest and morning smoothie while Don was out partying the night before.  John was up the first but Don came back with 4 in a row before falling out of the zone.  Both Don and John seem to be hitting the ball harder without over-hitting (at least not too much) and upping the general level of play rather than going for winners every other shot...  (Commentary by Don)

 John 4  Don 3

Apr. 18 John  6-4  6-7(7-4)  6-4  Match time: 2:55
John wins again, but not so easily this time as Don showed his new fitness by getting to balls that normally would have been winners.  John continued to hit hard but also showed a little finesse when he had Don out of position.  Danny-Cam was available for the third set but neither player made a challenge.  (Commentary by Don)

 John 3  Don 3

Apr. 15 John  6-1  6-3  Match time: 1:45
John was well rested while Don was half tuckered out (from shoveling rock and moving wood) for this late afternoon match.  John wins easily behind big hitting that kept Don on his heels throughout the match.  (Commentary by Don)

Don 3  John 2

Apr. 12 Don  6-2  6-7(7-3)  6-3  Match time: 3:05
Don regains the season lead on this windy whirlwind day. He wins the 1st set easily, nearly obtaining a VB. He was up most of the way in the 2nd before John dug deep and eventually won the deciding tie-breaker. The 3rd set was all Don, as John’s wheels fell off. Don’s new regimen has him in top form, and John is still suffering from Dunlop Disease, and will continue to struggle w/ 3 set matches until he finds the proper medication.  (Commentary by John)

Don 2  John 2

Apr. 8 John  6-4  7-6(7-4)  Match time: 2:45
John pulls out the stops in the second set tiebreaker for a win in this very long two set morning match in almost perfect weather.  Don's Dixie Syndrome was acting up a bit more than usual, while John was hitting screaming winners from the baseline.  (Commentary by Don)

Don 2  John 1

Apr. 6 Don 6-3  3-6  6-2  Match time: 2:05
Don wins again with slightly more aggressive play and penetrating shots  (rock hauling and wood splitting are giving Don the ability to put a little extra something on the ball).  Don won six games in a row from 1-3 in the first for a virtual bagel.  John came back to take the second set but didn't have much left in his tank for the third.  (Commentary by John)

Don 1  John 1

Apr. 2 Don 6-4  5-7  7-5  Match time: 2:55
Don comes away w/ the win and ties up the new season 1-1. The 1st set could have gone either way. Don was up 5-3 in the 2nd set, but John found some much needed energy, and won the next 6 games, earning a virtual bagel. John had 2 game points to go up 3-0 in the 3rd, but Don breaks his serve, and continues to hit well and accurate for the remainder of the match. Don is in top shape, and John is not. John knows he needs to do more work on his fitness in order to have any chance of taking this season.  (Commentary by John)

John 1  Don 0

Mar. 25 John 6-3  6-2  Match time: 1:45
John wins easily on this windy day to start the new season.  Don was hitting some good shots, but John made some key stab-volleys and lobs as well as moving Don around the court (Don was a little tired from shoveling rock, but pretty soon the extra muscle mass should help him get balls past John)  (Commentary by Don)
