2008 Winter Season Tennis Scores
(winter solstice to spring equinox)

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit.  The season winner earns a lunch at the local Chinese buffet.

John wins the winter 2008 season!

Mar. 21 John 7-6(7-2)  2-6  7-5  Match time: 3:05
John lurches over the finish line of the winter season playoff match with an win in a long match on a beautiful day.  The first set was well over an hour, with one game going to deuce 16 times.  Don was in his zone in the second set, winning six in a row to earn a virtual bagel (at 5-2 John was saving energy for the third).  John got an early break in the third set, but Don came back from 5-3 to draw even at 5-5.  John served his best game to go up 6-5 and with the barn door in sight hit big returns for the break.

 Don 5  John 5

Mar. 9-17 John 4-6  6-4  6-3  Match time: 2:45
John ties the season with a win after a long rain delay.  Don came from behind to pull out the first set and had points to go up 5-2 in the second as light rain began falling, but John broke to get back on serve just as the rain became too heavy to play.  Over a week later John came out swinging big, winning 10 points in a row and taking the first 4 games as he cruised to victory.  One final match will decide the season.

 Don 5  John 4

Mar. 6 Don  1-6  6-4  6-4  Match time: 2:35
Don takes the 1st game, but John storms through the next 6 games to take the 1st set, and earn a virtual bagel. John goes up in the 2nd set, but Don focuses and pulls it out 6-4, after a bystander predicts he will win [despite him being behind at the time]. John goes up in the 3rd 4-3, but Don’s girlfriend arrives as he ties it up 4-4, and it was all Don the rest of the way, wining 6-4. The season is rapidly winding down, and every match is crucial in determining who picks up the tab for the highly coveted buffet.

John 4   Don 4

Mar. 3 John  6-4  6-1  Match time: 1:45
John draws even in the race to the buffet with another win after a long rainy spell.  The temperature was in the 70's so John's power shots were cranking.  The wind gave both player's fits, especially when hitting into the wind.  Don is hopeful his wood splitting regimen will counter John's power with some of his own...

Don 4  John 3

Feb. 1 John  6-4  6-4  Match time: 1:50
John tightens the season race with another straight set win.  Don had an early break in both sets, but John came from behind in both sets by keeping Don on his heels with deep shots.  Both players were having trouble losing balls in the sun and serving in gusty conditions.

Don 4  John 2

Jan. 28  John  7-5  6-2  Match time: 1:50
John thwarts Don's dreams of a 5-1 ratio for the season with a straight set win.  The first set could easily have been Don's - John served out the set with some of his best serving when in fact Don should have been serving to get into a tiebreaker, and no one noticed the wrong player was serving till the game was over).   But it was all John in the second as Don was moving too slow from recent buffets...

Don 4  John 1

Jan. 12  Don  6-4 3-6  6-3  Match time: 2:10
Don pulls out another win in this tightly contested match. The 1set could have easily went the other way, but Don stays focused and perseveres. John gets it together in the second and forces the deciding 3rd set. It was close but Don wasn’t going anywhere, and John made costly mistakes resulting in his loss.

Editor's note: John's biggest mistake was grabbing the wrong pair of shoes on the way to the courts...

Don 3  John 1

Jan. 8  John  6-3  6-3  Match time: 1:40
John gets on the board with a high velocity victory after Don gives him a pair of cast-off shoes.  Despite having a little trouble with overkill-shot syndrome John was mostly in the zone with his big forehand, hitting flatline winners even on the full run.

Don 3  John 0

Jan. 7  Don  6-3  6-3  Match time: 1:45
Don is a man on a mission. He comes away w/ the 3rd win in a row on this globally odd warm day in January, w/ temps in the upper 60’s. John is still feeling the effects from the holiday food fests, and Don must be slurping smoothies as he zones out on the Nordic-trac. It seems he can do no wrong, as he wears John down, running him side to side, while waiting for the right ball to send singing by. John’s shoes show the signs of effort that the score does not reflect. A new pair will help, but he knows it will take more than fresh gear this season.

Don 2  John 0

Dec. 31  Don  6-3  6-0  Match time: 1:35
Don comes away w/ a decisive win today. After being down 1-4 in the 1st set, John has his own burst of “zone hitting”, and ties it up 5-5. Don wins the next 2 games, thwarting John’s attempt to take the crucial 1st set. It was all Don in the 2nd, as Don could do no wrong, earning a fell fledged bagel. John felt as though he was carrying a Christmas ham around his waist, unable to get to the well placed balls that Don was repeatedly hitting.

Don 1  John 0

Dec. 29  Don  6-3  2-6  7-6(13-11)  Match time: 2:45
Don comes out of the gate on fire, as he takes the 1st set 6-2. Most of the games were very close going to deuce. John was down 0-2 in the 2nd set, but musters up the strength to make a comeback, and in doing so, wins the next 6 games. The 3rd set was tight the whole way, and John was up 6-5, having a match point. John calls Don’s lob long, but agrees to play a let, as it was very close, and he was up at the net as it dropped [BIG mistake]. Don breaks John’s serve, and we go to the tie-breaker, as daylight is fading fast. Both players save match points against each other until Don finally pulls it out 13-11. John knows it’s going to take more effort to get/stay on top this season than ever before, as Don’s game has improved dramatically. Stay tuned as John plans to give Don a run for the money [in this case “buffet”].
