2009 Spring Season Tennis Scores
(spring equinox to summer solstice)
These scores really don't have anything to
do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of
friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt
to stay reasonably fit. The season winner earns a lunch at
the local Chinese buffet.

Don usually does well in a morning match, but
today he could hardly hit a ball without
succumbing to the Dixie reflex - needless to say
John had not trouble keeping Don on his heels.

John overpowered Don in the first set, but Don
found found his rhythm to take the second.

fatigue factor, but John unloaded on

12 John 6-1 7-6(7-5)
Match time: 1:53

|
Don restrung both of
John's rackets just before the match, but John
only needed one to dominate the first
set in 37 minutes. The second set took
1:16 and could have gone either way, but John
played more aggressively to get the first and
only mini-break in the tiebreaker at 5-5

Don comes away w/ a easy win, on this
partially windy afternoon match. John once again
breaks a string, and has to use Don’s spare
[which he did well w/ last match]. However, it was all Don
this match. Don keeps John on a string, running
him side to side, not allowing him to be on the
offensive. And when John did try to end the
point by coming to net, Don came up w/ the goods
w/ crisp passing shots, or lobs just out of
reach for John to put away. Danny Cam was there,
and he said it was best he had ever seen Don
play, which John concurs.

8 John 6-0 6-3
Match time: 2:05
 |
| John shakes off his last two losses
by steam rolling Don after a week and a half of
rain. John broke a string in the second game,
but didn't have his own spare racket - Don feigned
reluctant to offer his own spare racket since the
last time John borrowed it produced a similar
thumping. Don is almost hoping John stays with
the oversize lightweight racket...

27 Don 6-1 4-6 6-1
Match time: 2:15
|
| Don wins the 1st set easily, and was up 4-1 in the 2nd set, before John got in his groove, winning the next 5 games to take the 2nd set. Don then wins the 1st game in the 3rd set, denying John’s VB. The remainder of the 3rd set was a
“Don Highlight Reel” as he was [channeling Agassi] dictating the points, painting the lines, and running John side to side. (Commentary by
John) |

24 Don 6-1 7-6(7-2) Match
time: 1:40
 |
| Don wins in straight sets in our
1st morning match of the season. He earns the
coveted hula girl for going Hawaiian (5-0), despite John trying his best to
derail him. The 2nd set was hard fought, w/ Don
denying 4 set points that John had, to take it to a
deciding 3rd set. (Commentary by
John) |

17 John 6-4 6-0 Match
time: 1:30
 |
| John storms back from his loss,
winning easily despite a promising warm-up and first
set from Don. But Don could find no traction
in the second set as John dominated with controlled
aggression. Don had four break points when
John served for 5-0, as well as a couple game points
when serving to avert the bagel, but John decided he
wanted a real bagel more than a virtual bagel with a
side of hula girl. (Commentary by
Don) |

11 Don 6-7(7-4)
6-3 7-5 Match
time: 3:15
|
| Don finally gets on the
scoreboard w/ a win! He premeditated his best
chance of winning by treating John to a buffet right
before the match [knowing John’s weakness for
grazing]. John takes the first set tie-breaker in
the wind fest, but Don comes right back taking the
second 6-3. The third set, and match was up for
grabs to whoever had the wheels and focus to
persevere. Don saved 4 match points @ 4-5, and John
saved two @ 5-6, but Don gets the win on his third
match point. (Commentary by
John) Editor's note: Don says "Nobody beats me
7 times in a row." |

5 John 6-3 6-7(8-6)
6-3 7-5 Match
time: 2:55
|
| John wins again in another long
match. Don saved 5 match points in the second
set (3 on John's server at 5-4 and two more in the
tiebreaker), but John was able to move Don enough to
take his legs before losing his own (a whole lot of
running was going on). (Commentary by
Don) |

2 John 6-2 7-5 Match
time: 1:45
|
| John wins the first set easily in
gale force winds. Don had chances to go up in
the second set, but couldn't hit through the wind
with enough power to keep John off the net. (Commentary by
Don) |

31 John 3-6 6-1 6-3 Match
time: 2:55
|
| John wins again on a windy day as
Don runs out of gas in the third (John was close to
cramping, but managed to conceal the pain in the
closing game) (Commentary by
Don) |
John 2 Don 0

24 John 6-2 4-6 6-4 Match
time: 2:35
 |
| John came out firing big as usual,
taking the first set easily and going up 4-3 in the
second. But Don found his rhythm and took
the next six games for a virtual bagel and a 3-0
lead in the third. Faced with the imminent
specter of Don going Hawaiian or even full bagel,
John found the energy to pull out a win in the
third. (Commentary by
Don) |
John 1 Don 0
| Mar.
22 John 6-3
6-2 Match
time: 1:45 |
| John starts the new season with a
comfortable win. Don had many opportunities to
break John throughout the match, but John denied
them all with power in control, winning the first
set on a single break (usually the first set is a
breakathon). (Commentary by
Don) |
