2009 Summer Season Tennis Scores
(summer solstice to fall equinox)
These scores really don't have anything to
do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of
friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt
to stay reasonably fit. The season winner earns a lunch at
the local Chinese buffet.

Sept 16 - Happy birthday John!!!
Sept. 15 John 6-1 6-1 Match
time: 1:35
 |
|
John wins again with his big forehand, keeping
Don on defense most of the match. Don
fared better in the optional third set, going up
5-3 with several excellent passing shots, but
John came back to force a tiebreaker, hitting
back to back forehand winners at 6-6 in the
tiebreaker despite being on the verge of cramps.

Sept. 8 John 6-1 1-6 6-0 Match
time: 1:45
 |
|
John grunts his way to another big hitting
victory. Don managed a big second set
comeback after being blown away in the first,
but hit the wall early in the third as John
continued to drill, baby drill...

August 30 John 6-3 4-6 6-3 Match
time: 2:45 |
|
John amasses a nearly insurmountable lead with
three weeks to go in the season. Don
played well to take the second set, but played a
few bad points and double faulted a few times to
go down 4-0 in the third before rallying.
John saved 2 break points for Don to get back on
serve at 4-4, the second with a perfect lob off
a backhand flick while straight towards the
backcourt fence.

August 23 John 6-0 6-3 Match
time: 1:35
 |
|
Don apparently suffered more party-lag from
yesterday's pond party as John has little
trouble rolling to a quick victory. Don
was in every service game and many return games
with game or break points (several times even
double game or break) but couldn't seem to win a
game without a 40-0 lead. (Commentary by

August 20 John 6-1 1-6 6-4 Match
time: 2:30 |
|
John wins again in this fairly high quality
match. The first twelve points of the
match went to the server. A short shower
delayed play for about 45 minutes, after which
John won the next four close games to close out
the set. Don took the second set in
similar fashion, but John had a little more
oomph left towards the end of the third. (Commentary by

August 9 John 6-4 6-4 Match
time: 2:10 |
|
John comes out on top of another long morning
sweatfest, winning the first set on a single
break of server setup by a net cord winner.
Don got up a break twice in the second but
couldn't hold onto the lead as John used
everything he had left to finish it in two. (Commentary by

August 6 Don 7-6(7-3) 7-6(7-2) Match
time: 2:25 (for 2 sets!!) |
|
Don captures yet another win in straight sets.
John tried to play “Mr. Rogers” on the crucial
points, waiting for Don to dump the point, but
that’s not his normal MO, and it was John who
did the dumping. John felt as if he could have
taken Don in the 3rd set, but Don closed it out
in the 2nd set tie-breaker w/ decisiveness. Don
has time to make a run at the summer season, but
John has plans to thwart his efforts w/ the
purchase of new racquets. Stay tuned! (Commentary by

August 2 John 4-6 7-6 6-4 Match
time: 2:55 |
|
John talked Don into playing back to back days
for a chance to wash away the taste of defeat.
Don played the big points a little cleaner to
take the first set after holding a ten deuce
game at 4-4. Once again John had points
for 5-1 in the second, but Don storms back and
had 3 match points at 6-5 before John makes a
miraculous get to save the set. The third
set went John's way after John broke Don in a 9
deuce game at 3-4. (Commentary by

August 1 Don 6-4 7-5 Match
time: 2:05 |
|
Don gets on the board w/ a straight set win over
John on this Saturday late afternoon sweat fest.
John jinxed his chances of wining by mentioning
that if he won, it would be A Hawaiian [5-0]
season match score……The 1st set was close the
whole way, w/ long, several deuce games. Don’s
serve was clicking, and he had several great
passing shots, mostly backhand, as John
approached the net. John went up 4-1 in the 2nd,
and had point for 5-1, before Don gathered
himself, and ran John ragged, side to side,
coming from behind 2-5 to take the set/match at
7-5. (Commentary by John) |

25 John 6-4 7-6 7-5 Match
time: 3:30 (on court) |
|
John wins again in this long match that included
a 90 minute rain delay and a sort of traveling
buffet on John's side of the net. John won
a ten deuce game to break near the end of
the first set, but Don took a similar game late
in the second to force a tiebreaker. John
outlasted Don in the third set, possibly from
all the food (John may
actually have gained weight during the match).

14 John 7-5 6-4 Match
time: 1:50
|
|
Don jumped up 4-0 in the first set, but John
came back (amidst the noise of a masonry saw
cutting large landscaping blocks) to take the
set. The opening game of the second set
went between add-in and add-out about eight
times as the saw ran intermittently...

2 John 6-2 7-5 Match time:
1:45
|
|
John extends his winning streak as Don was just
a little too tired to get into a third set.
Satisfyingly, John reports being much more tired
and stiff after these two sets Don than after
two longer sets he played recently against Harry
(in yet another draw - John and Harry have yet
to complete a full match).

24 John 6-4 7-5 Match time: 2:25
|
|
John wins wins the season opener as Don is still
slightly sleep depraved after attending a
weeklong festival. Don was up 5-3 in both
sets and had set pints in both sets, but
couldn't close the door as John came up with
miracle shots or impossible gets.
