2010 Spring Season Tennis Scores
(spring equinox to summer solstice )

These scores really don't have anything to do with Spectrum's business - they are the scores of friendly matches played between Don and John in an attempt to stay reasonably fit.  The season winner earns a lunch at the local Chinese buffet.

Spring 2010 matches:  John 11   Don 3

June 11  John  6-4  7-5  Match time: 2:05
John comes out on the winning side of slightly more key points than Don to take this slugfest.  There were quite  a few long grueling points where both players showed patience and restraint as well as going for big shots when they were there.  John took the lead late in the second set with a near miracle backhand stab drop volley winner on one of Don's zippiest low-rider passing shots...
(Commentary by Don)

John 10   Don 3

June 7 Don  5-7  6-4  6-4  Match time: 3:15
Don comes away w/ a much needed win via a very l-o-n-g match that tested both players nerves, and stamina. John denies himself a breakfast "slamwich" before the match, as he believes Don is most likely @ the court already. However, Don suddenly pulls up behind John at the traffic light, thus John will be running on empty [vs. Don's power breakfast]. John pulls out the 1st set 7-5, and looks to take one of the next two sets. Don has other plans, and jumps up to a 5-1 lead in the second, as the school buses unload multiple classes of children onto the park. The distractions generally work in John's favor, as he fights back to 4-5, hoping to take the set, and win the match. But Don quashes John's hopes by winning the second set. Don goes up 4-1 in the 3rd, as he runs John ragged. John digs deep, and saves 8 match points, before Don closes it out 6-4.
(Commentary by John)  Note: Don says "No one beats me 8 times in a row."

John 10   Don 2

May 30 John  3-6  6-4  6-3  Match time: 2:55
John virtually assures victory in the spring season with yet another win in this sweat fest.  Don won four straight games from being down 3-2 to take the first set, but, after fresh strawberries between sets, John came back with four straight of his own. Don had points for 5-5 in the second, but John saved it with a whipshot and cruised through the third set.   (Commentary by Don)

John 9   Don 2

May 25  John  6-4  6-3  3-6  Match time: 2:05
Don quickly went up 4-0 in the first set and had several points for 5-0 before Dixie errors started flowing off his racket.  John shrugged off a dog injury as he warmed up and went on a six game streak to take the first set with a vb.  Don stumbled through the second set but couldn't find his rhythm till the optional third set.      (Commentary by Don)

John 8   Don 2

May 20  John  6-3  6-3   Match time: 1:55
John comes from behind in the first set and has a relative cake walk in the second as Don struggles to keep his eye on short sitters.  Meanwhile, John continues to improve his quick twitch reflexes at the net.     (Commentary by Don)

John 7   Don 2

May 10  John  7-5  6-2  Match time: 2:15
John continues to win as Don continues to struggle with his severe Dixie syndrome reflex causing untold errors.  Meanwhile John is hitting with more control, clearly showing the benefit of good coaching...  (Commentary by Don)

John 6   Don 2

May 5  John  5-7  7-5  6-3  Match time: 2:55
Don came from 4-1 down to win the first set, which included a break at 5-5/deuce while the lawn crew entered the courts for a final assault with two weed whackers and a blow broom.  With John groaning about how he'd "rather retire in the third than the second" Don took his foot off the pedal long enough for John to hang in the second set and eventually grab it with the help of several stick save drop shot winners.  John was all energizer bunny and big shots in the third as he jumped out to 3-0 before Don knew what was happening.  (Commentary by Don)

John 5   Don 2

April 28  John  6-2  7-6(5)  1-6  Match time: 1:45
John started strong in the first set and was up 3-0 in the second before Don found his groove to mount a comeback.  Don served for the second set at 5-4 and 6-5, but John made a couple stick saves on set Don's set points, then lunged over the finish line in the tiebreaker, avoiding almost certain devastation in the third (Don won the optional third set easily)(Commentary by Don)

John 4   Don 2

April 18  John  7-5  6-2 Match time: 1:50
Danny stopped by to enjoy the excellent first set as both players brought their best stuff, playing long competitive points and making more winners than errors.  Don fell apart after going up 2-0 in the second, allowing John to win a vb and regain an integer ratio. (Commentary by Don)

John 3   Don 2

April 15  Don  3-6  6-1  6-4  Match time: 2:30
Don comes away w/ a well deserved win in our first morning match of the season. John did well in the 1st set, but Don stormed back in the 2nd, going Hawaiian (5-0) in the second. The 3rd set was hard fought by both players. Don's serve was clicking, his passing shots were lowriders w/ zip on them, and his punishing side to side rally shots were too much for John to run down….
 (Commentary by John)

John 3   Don 1

April 12   John  6-4  6-1  Match time: 1:35
Don struggled with the Dixie reflex from the opening ball, while John could hardly miss (even when whipping a low ball on a full run in a Nadal-esque fashion).  John had 4-0 in both sets, but Don managed to stop John from going Hawaiian.
 (Commentary by Don)

John 2   Don 1

April 10   Don  7-5  3-6  7-5   Match time: 2:45
Don gets on the board with an impressive win today.  Both players held serve until Don broke John's service game at 5-5. Don took the 1st set, despite John having 4 break points to take it to a tie-breaker.  John was in control in the 2nd set, winning it 6-3. The 3rd set was a test for both players w/ long rallies, but Don came through victoriously by staying focused, and making good decisions on when to come to net.
 (Commentary by John)

John 2   Don 0

April 6   John  7-5  6-4   Match time: 1:55
John wins again as Don continues to struggle with the Dixie Syndrome when under pressure.  The first set could have gone either way, but John played the big points just a little better (and got big time help from a timely win gust on a break point that would have changed the first set).
 (Commentary by Don)

John 1   Don 0

April 1   John  6-4  6-0  (1-6)  Match time: 1:40
John wins the opening match of the spring season on a hot  windy day.  The first eight games of the first set were breaks, with Don breaking John at or near love but failing to win multiple games points in his own service games.  At 4-4 John found his server and held at love for the first service hold of the match.  With the first set under his belt John swung freely in the second racking up 9 straight games on his way to a bagel.  Don found small consolation in the optional third set.
