Roane County Republican Volunteer Defaces Neighbor's Door

October 4, 2004

When I discovered that my door had been defaced (see first picture below), I walked into the Republican headquarters and, not wanting to immediately assume that they had been involved, asked if anyone had "noticed who had vandalized my door."

An elderly woman immediately stepped up to to claim responsibility for "tearing down those fascist lies."  She indignantly informed me that I had "no right to criticize George Bush" and recommended that I leave the country if I didn't appreciate what Bush was doing on my behalf.  When I asked her name, she declined to say, perhaps now wondering if she had violated any elections laws.  I tried (unsuccessfully I'm afraid) to explain that I and other patriots felt we not only had the right, but an obligation to criticize the government (or its head lackey) when members of that government lie to citizens and the world while abusing power for personal gain.

After having had conversations with several persons who witnessed the vandalism it seems likely that another of the Republican volunteers pulled the indignantly self-righteous lady away from my door before she was done (which is why she missed one of the Outsource Bush stickers, as well as the excellent Tom Tomorrow toon that she probably didn't understand).

The second picture below shows the door after I repapered it.  I added a corporate flag that includes a good definition of fascism (and a quote from FDR), especially for the benefit of the nice lady who seems to think we should all fall into lockstep behind her exalted W...
